For more than 20 years, the Maryann Hartman Awards have been presented at the University of Maine annually, in honor of late Professor Maryann Hartman. The awards recognize distinguished Maine women and their accomplishments in the arts, politics, business, education and community service. The intention is that the work of the women selected will provide inspiration to others and demonstrate the levels of attainment now possible for women.

The 2010 recipients, Candace Austin, Shenna Bellows and Francine Stark, were honored on Wednesday, October 27th.
Candace Austin – for her commitment to adult literacy in Penobscot and Washington Counties, as well as in Morelia, Mexico
Shenna Bellows – for her vision and leadership in the Maine Civil Liberties Union
Francine Stark – for her work against domestic violence and for her peace and justice activism

Today on Weekend Voices we bring you to the Wednesday’s event, to hear these women being honored, and to hear their own words about the work they are doing, and important issues facing Maine. This was recorded by Chris Stark. The emcee is Ann Schonberger, Director of the Women’s Studies program at the University of Maine.

On October 9th, 2010, the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine held a teach-in called “Stop the Longest War: Ending the War in Afghanistan”. The keynote speaker was Jo Comerford, the Executive Director, of the National Priorities Project, a long time community organizer who has served as Director of Programs at The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. In addition to her work there, which included a focus on food security, Jo Comerford has also directed the American Friends Service Committee’s community organizing efforts in western Massachusetts. She holds an MSW in community organizing from Hunter College School of Social Work and is an adjunct faculty member of Smith College School of Social Work.

The National Priorities Project (or NPP) where she serves as Executive Director, is a non-profit research organization that analyzes and clarifies federal data so that people can understand and influence how their tax dollars are spent. Located in Northampton, MA, since 1983, NPP focuses on the impact of federal spending and other policies at the national, state, congressional district and local levels.

WERU volunteer Steve Soucy recorded her talk at the Peace & Justice Center’s teach-in last weekend. It has been edited slighting for length. If you would like to follow along with the slides the speaker makes reference to, you can find them at the website: http://peacectr.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Jo-Comerford-talk-slides.pdf — but they are not crucial to understanding her presentation.

But first, we pick up where we left off on Saturday’s edition of Voices:

A gubernatorial candidates forum on the topic of Maine’s quality of place, was held on September 21st at the Bangor Opera House. The candidates for governor were asked for their views on the future, and how they would protect and promote Maine’s natural and cultural resources. Today we bring you part 2 of the forum. Part 1 aired on Weekend Voices on Saturday and is available, if you’d like to listen, on our archives at weru.org

In attendance were 4 of the 5 candidates who will be appearing on the ballot for Governor: Independents Shawn Moody, Eliot Cutler and Kevin Scott, and the Democrat, Senator Libby Mitchell; Republican Paul LePage was invited, but did not attend. The forum was emcee’d by Carol Coultas, editor of Maine Biz
