Maine Currents 10/5/16

Producer/Host: Amy Browne
Studio Engineer: John Greenman

Today we welcome visitors from El Salvador and local residents who are working together through US-El Salvador Sister Cities. The right wing death squads in El Salvador’s civil war (1980-1992) were funded and trained by the US government, so alliances between citizens of these two countries may seem unlikely – but our guests explain how they are strong and mutually beneficial. We also look at some of the issues facing El Salvador today, and hear what Salvadorans are saying about the US presidential elections.

Guests:
Zulma Tobar, US-El Salvador Sister Cities staff, based in El Salvador
Carly Roach, Volunteer with US-El Salvador Sister Cities, based in El Salvador
Dennis Chinoy, PICA and City of Bangor Sister City Committee (with Carasque, El Salvador)
Karen Volckhausen, Maine farmer and member of the MOFGA committee that has a sistering relationship with CCR, a rural communities organization in El Salvador
Willie Marquart, WERU Finance Manager and former Sister Cities staff member- has worked with MOFGA committee and the sister stations WERU and Radio Sumpul in El Salvador

In Augusta yesterday, the legislature’s committee on Agriculture Conservation & Forestry heard nearly 2 hours of public comments in support of legalizing growing hemp in Maine – and not one argument in opposition. In the 1st half of today’s program we take you to that public hearing. Then we’re joined by Karen Marysdaughter of “Climate Solutions” and 350Maine; WERU General Manager Matt Murphy and Board Member John Greenman for a discussion of the station’s upcoming vote on divesting from fossil fuels. Meredith DeFrancesco also joins us with a preview of tomorrow’s episode of “RadioActive” which will be focusing on the latest developments in the controversial re-write of Maine’s mining regulations

WERU News Report 4/23/14

Producer/Host: Amy Browne

We have the latest news on the proposed Searsport dredging and dumping project, as well as this report on efforts to clean up the shoreline, and we’ll tell you about a new way to share your WERU memories.

Segment 1: Bar Harbor resident Ron Greenberg works with the Clean Waters, Clean Shores project, mobilizing volunteers to help clean up beaches and islands downeast. They are looking for volunteers to help with a new project.

Segment 2: Elsewhere along the Maine coast, there is growing opposition to the proposal to dredge the shipping channel near Searsport and dump nearly a million cubic yards of sludge elsewhere in the bay. Supporters of the plan – a small minority judging from attendance at 2 recent public meetings–are working to sell the issue as one of regional economic development. But many who make their living fishing Penobscot Bay have been vocally opposed. Here to give us an update is Kim Tucker, pro bono attorney for many of the dredge and dump opponents:

Segment 3: As our 25th anniversary year winds down, WERU has set up a special phone line for listener memories. Jim Campbell, host of “Notes from the Electronic Cottage” and one of the station’s founders, joins us to explain
