Coastal Conversations 5/27/16

Producer/Host: Catherine Schmitt
Studio Engineer: Amy Browne

Issue: Maine coastal and ocean issues

Program Topic: Local stream stewardship and restoration

Key Discussion Points:
Maine’s coastal rivers are home to several species of fish that are “sea run” or diadromous – they spend part of their lives in the ocean but return to freshwater to spawn.
Many Maine land owners and communities are taking action to open passage for migratory fish, restore stream habitat, and learn more about their local rivers and streams.
Stream projects bring together a diverse group of people, from transportation engineers and road construction companies to municipal, state and federal governments, land trusts, schools, and
conservation organizations.

Guests:
Jeremy Bell, The Nature Conservancy
Barbara Charry, Maine Audubon
Ruth Feldman, Island Readers & Writers
Ciona Ulbrich, Maine Coast Heritage Trust

Notes from the Electronic Cottage 5/26/16

Producer/Host: Jim Campbell

So what’s our world going to look like in 15 years or so? No one really knows, of course, but it’s a good bet that two technologies are going to play a very big role in whatever life is like in, say, 2030 – quantum computing and virtual reality. Here’s why.

Family Corner 5/25/16

Program Topic: Talking with our Kids about Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs and other Substances

Key Discussion Points:
a) Important to start talking with kids as early as toddler-age about what’s going on in our world, environment
b) Take advantage of the teachable moment – e.g., the cigarette butt on the ground, or seeing someone who is smoking
c) Learn with your child – go on websites, read, learn and talk together
