The following is an editorial from Voces en Contacto in El Salvador. It supports the rejection by the Centro Internacional de Arreglo de Diferencias Relativas a Inversiones of the Commerce Group’s suit against the country, and adds that it’s a victory for environmentalists. The $100 million indemnization demanded was illegal, although the Free Trade Agreement with the US had allowed mining. Pacific Rim’s presentation of a suit for $77 million was accepted, however. Voces en Contacto urges Salvadorans to pressure the government to prohibit transnational corporations and mining.
