This is a recording of the Americans Who Tell the Truth (AWTT) event to honoring Rob McCall at the unveiling of Robert Shetterly’s new portrait of him, at the Blue Hill Public Library on May 12th, 2018. (NOTE: The recording starts with a few minutes of singing that is partially off mic. Stick with it because the audio quality improves significantly after those first few minutes).

He is greatly admired in this area and beyond as the pastor (retired in 2014) of the First Congregational Church in Blue Hill and as the writer and voice of the popular Awanadjo Almanack, a bi-weekly commentary of insight into nature, political opinion through nature’s lens, and musings into all things spiritual and poetical. McCall says, “The Almanack is devoted to feeling at home in nature and breaking down the wall of hostility between us and the rest of creation.”
The Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits — now numbering over 235 — travel to schools, colleges, museums, churches and libraries all over the United States to promote engaged and courageous citizenship. “Rob McCall’s portrait will be a great addition to this project,” Shetterly says. “And I know of no greater contemporary nature writer and no greater source of wisdom for how we must think of ourselves in relation to nature if we want to survive on this planet.”

Rob Shetterly Speaks with Rob McCall, Latest Portrait in American Who Tells the Truth
On May 12th, Robert Shetterly’s portrait and education project Americans Who Tell the Truth will unveil a portrait of Rob McCall. Rob McCall is the recently retired pastor of the First Congregational Church in Blue Hill, and for the past 25 years he’s shared his poetic insights on nature, politics, spirituality and humanity in his Awanadjo Almanak, broadcasting on WERU FM, publishing in local newspapers and in book form, Small Misty Mountain.
We sat down in the studio last week with both Rob Shetterly and Rob McCall. We share some of that conversation today.
On Saturday, May 12th, Americans Who Tell the Truth, the Blue Hill Heritage Trust and WERU FM are hosting an event for McCall’s portrait unveiling at the Blue Hill Public Library from 530-7pm.

Call for Removal of EPA’s Administrator Scott Pruitt and Rob Shetterly Speaks with Rob McCall, Latest Portrait in American Who Tells the Truth
This morning, the Natural Resources Council of Maine held a press conference with healthcare providers and others calling for the removal of Environmental Protection Administrator Scott Pruitt and the need for urgent action to address clean water, air, climate change and keep or install environmental protections to protect public health.

Segment 1: Elves from the Community Union of Ellsworth and Hancock County paid a visit to Fairpoint strikers in Bangor yesterday, on Day 59 of their strike, dropping off a gift in solidarity.
Spirits are high on the picket line, despite the bitter cold and minimal progress on contract negotiations, partly due to all of the support the strikers have been receiving from the community. While waiting for them to arrive, we got an update from spokesperson James Feeney, a 32-year service technician based out of Fairpoint in Bangor:

Segment 2: In the spirit of peace on this first night of Hanukkah, we have some words from Dr Alice Rothchild. Some of the strongest opposition to the Israeli government’s policies toward Palestinians is coming from Jewish activists like Dr. Rothchild, who work for justice by speaking out publicly, often at great risk. She is a physician, author, filmmaker, and human rights activist who shares her observations on the conflict based on her Jewish upbringing as well as her personal, first hand knowledge of the region. She has been a member of several health and human rights delegations to the region, working with Israelis and Palestinians who “refuse to be enemies”. Here is some of what she had to say during a visit to Maine earlier this month, as one of the latest in Robert Shetterly’s “Americans Who Tell the Truth” portrait series.
