For more than 20 years, the Maryann Hartman Awards have been presented at the University of Maine annually, in honor of late Professor Maryann Hartman. The awards recognize distinguished Maine women and their accomplishments in the arts, politics, business, education and community service. The intention is that the work of the women selected will provide inspiration to others and demonstrate the levels of attainment now possible for women.
The 2010 recipients, Candace Austin, Shenna Bellows and Francine Stark, were honored on Wednesday, October 27th.
Candace Austin – for her commitment to adult literacy in Penobscot and Washington Counties, as well as in Morelia, Mexico
Shenna Bellows – for her vision and leadership in the Maine Civil Liberties Union
Francine Stark – for her work against domestic violence and for her peace and justice activism
Today on Weekend Voices we bring you to the Wednesday’s event, to hear these women being honored, and to hear their own words about the work they are doing, and important issues facing Maine. This was recorded by Chris Stark. The emcee is Ann Schonberger, Director of the Women’s Studies program at the University of Maine.
